Hyderabad, Feb 23: Hyderabad City Police Commissioner Anurag Sharma has said police have been making progress in the investigation into Dilsukhnagar bomb blasts and exuded confidence that the culprits would be nabbed soon.
Talking to the media after a review meeting with Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy and Home Minister P. Sabita Indra Reddy, the Police Commissioner said collection of evidence at the blast site was completed. He said a special investigation team (SIT) was set up under Sandip Sandilya, Additional Commissioner (Crime) to handle the case. He said six special teams were formed to fan out and take the investigation forward. He also said Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy has agreed to give a reward of Rs 10 lakhs to any person giving information leading to the arrest of the criminals.
The CP said more men would be pressed into service. Stating that no explanation would suffice for the loss of human life, the Commissioner said the police would track down the terrorists and it would give some satisfaction to the families of the bereaved.
Asked if it was true the CC TV cameras at Dilsukhnagar were made defunct before the blasts, the CP denied the reports. He said the CC cameras were functioning properly. He, however, said the cameras were set up only for traffic management and not to handle crimes. He said of the 303 cameras installed in different parts of the city, 23 were not functioning while the rest were operational. He said the city police would also keep an eye on the security arrangements at cinema theatres and commercial complexes. He also said the preparedness of the private security personnel employed by these complexes would also be checked by the police. He said the city police would undertake a campaign to create awareness among the public about emergencies such as these, so that such incidents would not recur.
The Commissioner admitted that the police received alerts that there was recce in Dilsukhnagar, Begum bazaar, Abids and Ranigunj areas and was warned of a possible attack in these areas. He also said these were passed on to all levels and police were in a state of high alert. However, the city police were fully engaged in security measures in the old city. He said apart from pressing the entire city force into the old city to set things right, they had even taken men from other forces to supplement their efforts. He explained that the situation in the old city drew the attention of the entire city police from other issues. He said at that time 200 police pickets were set up to bring the situation under control. The commissioner also maintained that regular vehicle checks were being conducted in the city to find if any one was carrying any explosives. He said regular checks were also conducted with the Octopus and other forces.
