Rating: 2.0/5.0

Hari Dada (Nana Patekar), powerful politician in Mumbai decides to implement his Pure Mumbai project across the state. However when he tries to clean the largest slum in Asia, Dharavi, he faces stiff resistance from the locals there, emboldened by their leader Kaala (Rajinikanth).

To find out why the people of Dharavi slum are opposing Hari Dada's Pure Mumbai project, why he is unable to win elections in Dharavi despite sweeping Maharashtra and what his rivalry with Kaala, watch Kaala on silver screen.

Rajinikanth looked young defying his age and when given chance he showed his power with his expressions, emotions, body language and dialogue delivery. However such scenes are far and in between and many felt, they should have been more in the film.

Nana Patekar looked like a silent killer with his performance and personality in the film. Huma Qureshi performed her role accordingly and complimented Rajini in a appreciable manner. Eswari Rao with her witty performance as Rajini's wife attracted movie lovers attention.

Anjali Patil performed well as an aggressive Marathi girl in the film. But at times she turned too loud.

Others like Samuthirakani,Sukanya,Sampath Raj, Ravi Kale,Dhanush,Sakshi Agarwal etc..performed as per their roles.

Santosh Narayan's music is OK and couple of songs are well shot and foot tapping while others are forgettable. His background score elevated few scenes in the film but for most of the part it is loud testing the patience of the viewers. Cinematography of G.Murali beautified the film giving it a rich look. Sreekar Prasad could have edited many scenes as they dragged the film completely.

PA.Ranjith could have added scenes to elevate Rajini's mannerisms and trademark styles as they are missed dearly in the film. He should have included few interesting twists and turns to create bigger impact. Production values are good.

Plus Points

Rajinikanth's performance in some scenes

Couple of powerful dialogues

Minus Points

Routine story

Screenplay, Direction

Caste and Religion based references

Missing Super Star mannerisms

Slow pace, weak narration

When Rajini decided to team with PA.Ranjith even after the disaster of Kabali, many wondered what made Rajini come to do so.

PA.Ranjith decided to make amends by showing Rajini in complete mass avatar in Kaala. But while Kabali released with a huge buzz thanks to the powerful teaser, Kaala released without any such thing and with routine elements.

Ranjith tried to elevate Rajini's mass mannerisms as Kaala Seth, leader of the largest slum Dharavi fighting against the powerful politician. However right from the start, the film dragged till the interval except for few scenes here and there.

Viewers got an impression that they are watching a serial rather than a film on silver screen. Except for few powerful dialogues, the story moves in a routine manner with clichéd narration. Second half turns no difference and the film dragged though out, making movie lovers look towards the exit hoping for the end card and climax scenes.

Ranjith shocked all showing Super Star who enjoys following among all sections of people, confining himself as just a dalit and against all other sections. He also showed his anti Hindu sentiments clearly portraying the Villan as Lord Rama, Krishna and others. Ranjith failed with his story, screenplay and direction and it is surprising how Rajini decided to star in a film which is totally against many sections and especially Hindus, knowing very well, that it could hamper his political fortunes.

Kaala disappoints not only movie lovers but also die hard Rajini fans except for couple of scenes.

Final Talk

Kaala misses Rajini's super kick.
