Shiva (Mahesh Babu) is diligent officer in Intelligence Bureau and despite his higher qualifications and tech savvy skills, prefers to work in phone tapping section as he loves to tap the conversation and prevent the possible crimes.
In the midst of all this Shiva gets attracted to a medical student Charlie (Rakul Preet Singh). Even as Shiva starts enjoying the blossoming love and romantic life with Charlie, he gets huge shock when for the first time he fails to prevent a crime leading to the death of two women.
On secret investigation, Shiva finds even more shocking and stunning exposures about Bhairava (SJ.Surya), a sadistic psycho killer roaming freely in the streets of Hyderabad out to murder as many people as possible. To find out how Shiva weaves a web around Bhairava like a Spyder and catch him, before he wreaks destruction, enjoy Spyder on screen.
Mahesh Babu slipped into the role effortlessly. He attracts all with his stunning looks and handsome personality. He emoted and expressed well in couple of scenes and that's it. There is nothing much for Mahesh in the subdued role with no scope to show his acting prowess.
Rakul Preet Singh is confined to couple of romantic scenes and songs. She looked good but was not given any chance to show her acting skills. SJ.Suryah stole the show in the role with negative shades. He showed good expressions and emotions as a psycho killer.
Others like Bharath, RJ.Balaji, Priyadarshi, Shayaji Shinde performed according to their characters.
Harris Jayaraj's music is just ok. All the songs are well shot in a grand manner. Cicilia song is beautifully shot on screen highlighting the beauty of Rakul and the handsome looks of Mahesh Babu. Harris elevated the scenes with his powerful background score. Stunt choreography is much talked about. But most of the action scenes are ordinary and even the much publicized roller coaster fight though well caned ended in an abrupt manner.
Songs choreography surprised many, as Mahesh Babu came with ordinary dance moments. Costumes used for Mahesh Babu especially in the songs evoked laughter. Cinematography of Santosh Sivan is ok. Editing of Sreekar Prasad could have been more crispy especially in the second half.
Murugadoss known for his powerful action entertainers with social message should have worked on the story and script and included more twists and turns and plugged the loopholes before proceeding ahead with the film. Production values are good.

Lack of comedy
Mahesh Babu, Murugadoss combo when announced excited everyone as film from them did rounds for quite sometime. The teasers increased interest but once the film is released, everything fizzled with the bubble around Spyder bursted and one found that the story got lot of cobwebs which Murugadoss failed to remove with all his intelligence before beautifying on screen.
Murugadoss failed to live up to the expectations of not only Mahesh Babu's fans but also movie lovers. He generated interest with the first couple of scenes at the start of the film, but later the pace dips with romantic scenes. Action increases the film's speed ahead of the interval and interval bang generates interest among movie lovers about the second half.
However second half leaves all shocked with many illogical and half-baked scenes. Murugadoss in his quest to take cinematic liberties to make the film more interesting, finally botched up the entire story. While the comedy scenes in the film did not workout, the all important hair raising scenes, like catching the main criminal and the climax turned out to be the laughing stock. Many felt that these scenes insulted the intelligence of the movie lovers.
Murugadoss failed with his story, screenplay and direction. Had Murgudagoss did the film with a Tamil hero who is not a super star it might have worked but the star presence of Mahesh Babu, increased expectations. Mahesh got very limited screen presence and infact Murugadoss arrested Mahesh Babu in Spyder cobweb and Mahesh found it difficult to come out of it. Murugadoss failed to elevate Mahesh Babu's role as an intelligence Bureau officer and infact showed him as a joker making joke of people around him while catching the dreaded criminal. The climax turned routine with Mahesh delivering routine dialogues after killing the criminal. Murugadoss trademark emotions, social message and thought provoking scenes are missing in Spyder.
Finally Mahesh's attempt to make a grand entry into Kollywood with ace director like Murugadoss failed miserably and in the process dented his stardom in Tollywood.
Spyder fails in its secret mission on silver screen.
