Sanvi murder: The police story
Andhra Headlines, Oct 28: American Feds and policemen have explained to the court how they had unraveled the double murder of Satyavathi and her granddaughter Sanvi in a report, while producing the accused Yandamuri Raghu.

The crimes occurred under the Upper Marian Township police station area in Pennsylvania on October 22. At around 1:14 police received a call on phone number 911 from Venna Venkata Siva Prasad. Police officials Brian Hill and Richard Hiller immediately responded and rushed to the Marquis Apartments. They found the body of Satyavati in the kitchen. Then they questioned Shiva Prasad, her son and from him knew that his 10-month-old daughter Sanvi was missing. After searching the neighborhood, police registered cases of murder and abduction.

Because of the serious nature of the case, apart from Upper Marian Township Police, Montgomery Country Detective Bureau and FBI were also pressed into the investigation. Pennsylvania police have declared Amber Alert for tracing Sanvi.

The letter that gave the murderer away

Police scrutinized the papers strewn near the body of Satyavati. It was these papers that led them to the murderer. One of the papers they found was a ransom note. The note said they had kidnapped Sanvi and would leave her if 50,000 dollars were paid. The ransom note addressed Sanvi’s father Venkata as Shiva. The note also instructed that the money should be sent to Baja Fresh Restaurant in the Akme Store Complex through ‘Latha’. Police found ten printed copies of the ransom note at the scene of the crime. They also found that the letter was typed on a computer and separate prints were made.

As per the instructions in the ransom note, police sent Shiva Prasad and his wife Chenchulatha to the Baja Fresh Restaurant and secretly watched the area. But no one came there to collect the money.

On the next day forensic expert Dr. Paul Hoyer conducted postmortem on Satyavati’s body. He found that she died due to injuries on neck and chest. Police found that she had resisted the kidnap, as injuries were also found on her left arm.

As Shiva Prasad and Lata said they had no enemies, police started exploring other angles. The couple told the police that though they were financially comfortable, they were still not in a position to pay a ransom of 50,000 dollars.

Police concentrated on the ransom note. They got doubts as the kidnapper addressed the couple as Shiva and Lata.

Shiva was generally known as Venkata or Venna and Lata as Chenchu or Venna in their circle in America. When the police were told by the couple that their full names were Venna Venkata Siva Prasad and Venna Chenchu Lata, police understood that the kidnapper was known to them closely and knew their pet names known only to a few. Raghu’s name figured in the list of those few people who knew the couple intimately. As part of their investigation, police have also questioned Raghu. He told them that he knew nothing about the crime and that he was also searching for the child along with the couple. He told them that he had also printed some fliers and distributed them in the neighborhood.

Police however suspected him and in the interrogation, he has admitted to murdering both Satyavati and her granddaughter.

According to his confession ……

Raghu went into the apartment on October 22 at 11 am with a knife and ten copies of the ransom note. When Satyavati opened the door, he has threatened her with the knife and tried to carry Sanvi on his shoulder. However when he slipped and fell along with the child, Satyavati recovered from the initial shock and resisted. Raghu then stabbed her. When Sanvi started crying, he has wrapped the child in a towel and placed her in a suitcase. He has stolen some jewelry and placed the valuables also in the suitcase. Later he has taken the body of Sanvi to the apartment gym. He has left the suitcase in the bathroom of the steam room of the gym.
