Hyderabad, Feb 22: The YSR Congress chief Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy now appears to be sure that noose is tightening around his neck and he may be arrested any time now.
According to information, addressing a meeting of his party MLAs (former Congress men), MLCs and other functionaries on Tuesday, he has appealed to them to support his mother Vijayamma and work under her leadership, incase he was arrested by the CBI.
CBI which has been probing Jagan’s alleged illegal assets has already arrested his company Jagati Publications’ Vice Chairman Vijaya Sai Reddy. However, Jagan who is No. 1 accused in the case, was so far not arrested.
Reasons for the delay in his arrest are apparently political. The first reason is - he is an MP with special privileges. CBI has to double check its facts before arresting him. Second reason is the sympathy factor and its elections on elections, considered from a political angle by the government.
There was inordinate delay in the disqualification of the Jagan group MLAs who voted for the no-confidence motion of the TDP against the government. It is being said that the Speaker has already decided to disqualify the MLAs and even signed the order. But the order was kept in abeyance at the request of the government, which wanted the decision to be announced only after the Election Commission’s notification for by-elections to the existing 7 vacancies of Assembly.
The government did not want all the by-elections to be held simultaneously and hence postponed disqualification, which would cause by-elections in 17 more seats.
Now that the EC has already issued notification for holding by-elections to the 7 constituencies (6 in Telangana and 1 in Seemandhra), the disqualification order might soon be out. Still if Jagan is arrested immediately, it may generate sympathy for him in the by-polls. Jagan has decided not to field candidates in the Telangana area. His only concern is Kovuru in Nellore district, where he has asked his party men to put in concerted efforts and ensure the victory of Prasanna Kumar Reddy, the party candidate.
It is now being debated if Jagan would be arrested immediately, as there is only one seat where the sympathy factor might work, or would the government wait until March 18, when elections would be held to all the seven seats.
At any cost, it now appears to be sure that the government would give clearance to disqualifications and thereby a nod for the arrest of Jagan. Jagan appears to be very much prepared to face the eventuality and is reported to have told his colleagues that people’s support was with his party.
