T Bill in Rajya Sabha: All eyes on BJP
New Delhi: The AP Reorganization Bill 2013 will be introduced in Rajya Sabha on Tuesday at 12.30 PM.

President Pranab Mukherjee has accorded approval for the AP Reorganization Bill 2013.

Earlier today, Union Home minister Sushilkumar Shinde, Parliamentary affairs minister Kamal Nath and Rural Development minister Jairam Ramesh met Rajya Sabha chairman Hamid Ansari.

According to sources, senior ministers are holding a series of meetings with BJP leaders to ensure the support of the principal Opposition party when the bill is introduced in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday.

The BJP has reportedly asked for six changes in the version of the bill approved by the Cabinet on Friday. The party has called for a financial package for the Seemandhra region.

The UPA Government will largely depend on the BJP, which has numbers in Rajya Sabha to determine the course of the debate and its passage. Congress has 72 members and BJP has 47, while the total membership of the House is 248. Hence it needs BJP’s support for passage of the Bill.

There was a lot of speculation over whether President will approve the T Bill. There were even reports that President is likely to refer the Bill to the Supreme Court under Article 348.

Over the last few days, the way BJP leaders spoke, gave the impression that the Opposition party is trying to throw spanners in the Government’s works. Some sections attribute this to BJP’s compulsions in Seemandhra region, as leaders of that region are putting heavy pressure on their central leadership.
