22-A Property Issue: Ponguleti Apologises

In a bid to alleviate the widespread distress among property owners in Telangana, Revenue Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy has issued a formal apology for the inconveniences stemming from the inclusion of properties in the Prohibited Properties List under Section 22-A of the Indian Registration Act. This admission comes as thousands of residents in Hyderabad and surrounding districts face challenges in property registration, a process crucial for secure ownership. During a recent meeting with district collectors, Reddy assured that the government aims to rectify issues affecting approximately 35,000 to 38,000 land parcels within just two days, highlighting a proactive stance in addressing public grievances.

The minister's assurance comes amid mounting pressure from property owners, who have expressed frustration over the bureaucratic obstacles they face. In an effort to streamline communication, the government has introduced a toll-free number, 18005-9947-88, allowing citizens to directly report issues related to properties under the contentious Section 22-A. Reddy emphasized the government’s commitment to safeguarding private land ownership while simultaneously ensuring the protection of government properties. This dual focus is crucial, as it seeks to maintain public trust in the integrity of the registration process.

Historically, the inclusion of properties in the Prohibited Properties List has been marred by inconsistencies and administrative errors, leading to significant backlash from the public. The minister acknowledged that previous lapses by revenue officials in properly vetting the properties before submission to sub-registrars had contributed to the current predicament. With over 750 applications pending in the CURE districts, particularly in Medchal-Malkajgiri, Reddy pointed out the urgent need for corrective action, citing the court's directive to revise the list and expedite the resolution of registered complaints.

In addition to addressing the immediate issues in the CURE districts, the minister indicated a broader intent to focus on the legitimacy of land claims across the state. Notably, he mentioned specific challenges in affluent areas such as Jubilee Hills and Banjara Hills, where urban land ceiling issues complicate matters. By committing to an expedited review process, Reddy is not only addressing the backlog but also attempting to restore faith in the administrative system, which has come under scrutiny as a result of these ongoing challenges. He called on citizens to remain calm and assured them that applications submitted to either the revenue or registration department would be processed promptly, underscoring the government’s dedication to rectifying this pressing issue.
