A New Political Culture or Smart Optics?

A New Political Culture or Smart Optics?

Chennai: The early days of Vijay’s tenure as Chief Minister have begun with symbolism that Tamil Nadu has not witnessed in recent years. His decision to personally meet leaders across the political spectrum—praised by the Communist Party of India as the beginning of a “new political culture”—signals an attempt to reset the tone of governance in a state long defined by sharp political binaries.

For decades, Tamil Nadu politics has largely revolved around entrenched rivalries, where engagement between ruling and opposition leaders was often minimal and transactional. By reaching out to figures like M. K. Stalin and Vaiko, Vijay appears to be consciously projecting inclusiveness and dialogue. In a fractured mandate scenario—where his government’s stability hinges on continued external support—this outreach is not just idealism, but also strategic necessity.

However, the real question is whether this “new culture” will go beyond optics. Political courtesy is easy in the honeymoon phase; sustaining it through policy disagreements, legislative battles, and electoral pressures is far more challenging. If Vijay can institutionalise consultation and reduce adversarial politics, Tamil Nadu could indeed witness a meaningful shift. If not, this moment may remain just that—a moment, rather than a movement.
