A political titan steps down!

In a move that marks the end of an extraordinary chapter in Andhra Pradesh’s political history, Pusapati Ashok Gajapathi Raju, one of the founding pillars of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), has officially resigned from the party — closing the curtain on a 43-year-long illustrious political career.

Ashok, who belongs to the royal family of Vizianagaram and has been a dignified presence in state and national politics, sent his resignation letters to TDP national president N. Chandrababu Naidu and AP state president Palla Srinivasa Rao. In the letter, he respectfully requested the party leadership to accept his resignation, making it clear that his decision was irrevocable.

The Catalyst: Governor of Goa Appointment

Ashok Gajapathi Raju’s decision follows his recent appointment as the Governor of Goa by the Union Government. With this new constitutional role, he is required to remain politically neutral — and hence, it became imperative to step away from active party politics.

This transition signals not just a positional change, but a complete detachment from a party he has been intrinsically linked with since its birth in 1982, when legendary actor-politician Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao (NTR) founded the TDP as a voice for Telugu pride.

Ashok also stepped down from his position in the TDP Politburo, the party’s top policy-making body. In his letter, he expressed his heartfelt thanks to Chandrababu Naidu for entrusting him with important responsibilities over the years, which gave him the opportunity to serve the people and the country with dignity.

A copy of his resignation was dispatched to the TDP central office in Mangalagiri, formalizing the end of his active political engagement.

A Legacy That Spanned Generations

Ashok Gajapathi Raju’s political journey is deeply etched in the annals of Andhra Pradesh politics. Since joining TDP at its inception, he remained steadfastly loyal for over four decades — a rare feat in contemporary politics.

His electoral record is impressive: winning repeatedly as MLA and MP from Vizianagaram, serving in both state and central governments as a cabinet minister. He held portfolios ranging from Civil Aviation at the Centre to Revenue and Finance in the state. His career was built not on populist theatrics or political lobbying but on grace, integrity, and issue-based leadership.

Unlike many in politics, Ashok never lobbied for posts — posts chased him. His composure, parliamentary wisdom, and statesmanlike demeanor earned him admiration across party lines.

A Respectful Exit, A New Beginning

His appointment as the Governor of Goa is seen as a well-deserved honor for a man who has served public life with unmatched dignity. As Governor, Ashok will now play a non-political yet crucial role in upholding the constitutional fabric of India — free from partisan affiliations.

This graceful exit from TDP, however, is also emotionally significant. After 43 years of unwavering loyalty, his resignation signals not just a change of role but the closure of a grand political era — one defined by duty, heritage, and statesmanship.

Ashok Gajapathi Raju’s departure leaves a void in the TDP that won’t be easily filled. It’s the end of an era — and the beginning of a new, non-partisan chapter for one of Telugu politics’ most dignified figures.
