Everest Expedition Turns Tragic for Telugu Climbers

In a heartbreaking turn of events, two climbers from the Telugu states of India tragically lost their lives while descending from Mount Everest this week. Arun Kumar Tiwari, 53, and Sandeep Are, 46, both successfully reached the summit of the world's highest peak before encountering life-threatening challenges during their descent. The duo, who trained with the Hyderabad-based expedition group Boots and Crampons, faced perilous conditions that ultimately cost them their lives, highlighting the treacherous nature of high-altitude climbing.

Tiwari, originally from Uttar Pradesh and now living in Hyderabad, was a seasoned mountaineer with previous successful climbs of major peaks, including Denali and Mount Aconcagua. He reached the summit of Everest around 5:30 PM on May 21 but tragically succumbed to exhaustion at the notorious Hillary Step, a formidable rock face that climbers must navigate on their return. Despite the efforts of experienced Sherpa guides to assist him, Tiwari faced insurmountable challenges, leading to his untimely demise. His body remains unrecovered, with the complexities of retrieval at such altitudes posing significant logistical and financial hurdles.

Sandeep Are, from Hindupur in Andhra Pradesh and residing in Phoenix, Arizona, summited Everest just a day prior, on May 20, around 10:55 AM. Described as one of the strongest climbers in his expedition team, Are fell victim to severe snow blindness after momentarily removing his goggles to capture the momentous occasion with photographs. This misstep, exacerbated by high-altitude conditions, quickly escalated into High Altitude Cerebral Edema (HACE), a critical condition that can lead to coma or death. Despite a strenuous 48-hour rescue effort by Sherpas that brought him down to Camp II, Are ultimately succumbed to his injuries, leaving behind a grieving wife and an 18-year-old son.

The tragic fates of Tiwari and Are serve as stark reminders of the inherent dangers faced by climbers in their quests for adventure and achievement. The perilous ascent and descent of Everest are fraught with challenges that even the most prepared athletes cannot always overcome. Notably, this year saw a record number of 274 climbers summit Everest on May 21, with Tiwari and Are among them. While several members of their team, including others from the expedition, completed their journey safely, the harrowing experiences of Tiwari and Are underscore the unpredictable and often unforgiving nature of high-altitude mountaineering, where triumph is inseparably intertwined with risk.
