From Rs 500 to Rs 10: ISI shifts fake currency strategy

From Rs 500 to Rs 10: ISI shifts fake currency strategy

Indian security agencies have detected a major shift in the counterfeit currency strategy allegedly backed by Pakistan's ISI and operated through criminal syndicates linked to Dawood Ibrahim. Instead of targeting high-value Rs 500 notes, the network is now flooding the market with fake Rs 10, Rs 20 and Rs 50 notes, exploiting the fact that people rarely verify lower denomination currency during daily transactions.

Officials believe the move is aimed at circulating counterfeit notes more easily without attracting suspicion. Intelligence agencies have warned that the period leading up to April 2027 could see a sharp rise in fake low-value notes before the Reserve Bank of India introduces polymer Rs 10 and Rs 20 notes in 2028, featuring advanced anti-counterfeiting security elements. Authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant and carefully check even small denomination notes, as they are increasingly becoming a target for counterfeit networks.
