Hyderabad Launches ‘SHE Netra’

In a proactive move to bolster women's safety and privacy, the Hyderabad police have unveiled ‘SHE Netra’, a specialized initiative aimed at detecting hidden cameras in public spaces. This program is designed to conduct decoy operations across malls, theatres, and similar venues, with the objective of safeguarding the dignity of women from invasive surveillance practices. Police Commissioner VC Sajjanar emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating that it represents a crucial step in the fight against hidden surveillance, particularly in environments where women may feel vulnerable.

The SHE Netra initiative operates under the umbrella of the existing SHE Teams, which have been pivotal in tackling issues related to women's safety. Equipped with advanced hand-held gadgets capable of detecting concealed cameras, these teams will perform inspections in a variety of locations, including hotels, educational institutions, and commercial complexes. Each team consists of trained personnel who have undergone rigorous instruction on the use of this technology, ensuring a high level of preparedness for addressing potential threats to personal privacy.

The need for such an initiative has been underscored by recent incidents, including a disturbing case where a hidden camera was discovered installed within a household light fixture in a restroom. Although the Hyderabad police report that they have yet to receive formal complaints regarding hidden cameras in public areas, they are keen to implement this initiative as a preventative measure. It represents a forward-thinking approach to women's safety, aiming to deter potential violations before they can occur.

As part of the initiative, management in public establishments are now required to appoint a customer safety officer to act as the primary liaison with the SHE Teams. These officers will not only coordinate ongoing surveillance efforts but are also encouraged to procure their own camera detection equipment and conduct regular inspections. Deputy Commissioner Lavanya Naik Jadav noted that training will be provided by the police, ensuring that these designated personnel are well-equipped to maintain the safety and privacy of patrons in their establishments. This collaborative approach seeks to create a comprehensive framework for combating the rising concern of hidden surveillance, contributing to a safer public environment for all citizens.
