Hyderabad’s Global City Makeover

In an ambitious bid to reshape its urban landscape, the Telangana government aims to transform Hyderabad into a global city within the next decade, bolstered by an extensive infrastructure development agenda. This initiative is part of the state's overarching 'Telangana Rising Vision 2047,' which aspires to elevate Telangana's economic contribution to India's GDP to 10% by the year 2047. Duddilla Sridhar Babu, the state’s IT and Industries Minister, articulated these goals at the recent Nasscom GCC Summit 2026, highlighting the urgency for future-ready infrastructure to mitigate urban challenges and support exponential enterprise growth.

Central to this vision is a robust strategy focused on sustainable urban development and innovation. Minister Sridhar Babu underscored the importance of long-term planning, citing issues such as resource scarcity and traffic congestion that can stifle growth. Projects like Bharat Future City, a dedicated AI City, metro rail expansions, and the ambitious Musi river rejuvenation are designed not only to modernize the city but also to create an environmentally sustainable urban ecosystem. The state’s approach aims to convert Hyderabad into a net-zero city, reflecting a commitment to sustainability in its rapid urbanization.

Hyderabad's evolution as a preferred destination for global capability centers (GCCs) marks a significant milestone in its journey toward becoming a global hub. The city witnessed the establishment of over 70 GCCs in 2025 alone, the highest number in India, with expectations to add another 100 this year—translating to approximately 100,000 job opportunities. By shifting the paradigm from traditional back-office operations to innovative global value centers, Telangana is positioning its capital as a leader across various sectors, including technology, banking, and life sciences. This transformation not only fosters job creation but also enhances the city’s economic dynamism.

Inviting further investment, Minister Sridhar Babu emphasized the attractiveness of Hyderabad's talent ecosystem, which integrates expertise from diverse sectors such as finance, AI, and defense. He noted that the presence of major global tech players like Apple, Google, and Nvidia underscores the city’s potential for high-level cross-disciplinary collaboration. “A financial GCC in Hyderabad doesn’t just hire bankers; it taps into a rich pool of talent across sectors to innovate and create,” he remarked, illustrating the unique advantages that Hyderabad offers to prospective businesses. As the city gears up for this transformative journey, it remains to be seen how these developments will redefine its role on the global stage.
