India Emerges as First Responder to natural Disasters

India is increasingly emerging as a reliable first responder to natural disasters around the world, with its humanitarian missions extending well beyond its immediate neighbourhood. From earthquake rescue operations to emergency medical aid and relief supplies, India has steadily expanded its disaster response capabilities since the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami.

Recent missions include Operation Brahma in earthquake-hit Myanmar and Operation Sagar Bandhu in cyclone-hit Sri Lanka in 2025. India also launched Operation Dost after the devastating 2023 earthquakes in Turkey and Syria, sending rescue teams, medical personnel and emergency supplies. In June 2026, India deployed two C-17 aircraft carrying 30 tonnes of relief material and a 41-member rescue and medical team to earthquake-hit Venezuela.

India’s humanitarian role has also extended to global health and disaster preparedness. During the Covid-19 pandemic, the country supplied 300 million vaccine doses to 99 countries and two UN bodies under Vaccine Maitri. Alongside emergency relief, India has supported initiatives such as the international tsunami warning system and the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure, strengthening its image as a force for global humanitarian cooperation.
