'Peddi' Gets an OTT Reality Check
Despite emerging as a massive blockbuster in theatres, Ram Charan's Peddi has failed to replicate its box office magic on OTT. The film, which grossed over ₹400 crore worldwide and became one of the year's biggest commercial successes, was expected to dominate streaming charts as well. However, its digital debut has turned out to be far more modest than anticipated. After premiering on Netflix on July 9, Peddi managed only 1.9 million views in its first four days, according to the platform's weekly viewing data, securing only the fifth spot in Netflix's Global Top 10 Non-English Movies list.
The underwhelming start has surprised both fans and trade analysts, who had predicted a much stronger OTT performance given the film's theatrical popularity. While Peddi continues to enjoy a strong fan following, its initial streaming numbers suggest that the transition from the big screen to digital platforms has not been as seamless. Industry observers believe the opening falls short of expectations for a film mounted on such a grand scale and backed by immense pre-release hype.
A key factor being discussed is Netflix's release strategy. Although the film was made available in Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, and Malayalam, the Hindi version was notably absent from the platform. As Hindi represents India's largest OTT audience, the decision significantly limited the film's digital reach. Many viewers had expected the Hindi-dubbed version to be available after its theatrical run, especially since it had underperformed in cinemas. Analysts believe the lack of a Hindi release may have cost Peddi millions of potential viewers, impacting its overall streaming performance during its crucial opening week.
