'Ramayana' Takes Storytelling to New Heights
In a groundbreaking move that signals a new era for Indian cinema, Namit Malhotra, founder of Prime Focus Studios and CEO of DNEG Global, is transforming the ancient epic Ramayana into a two-part cinematic phenomenon. The film, notable for its ambitious storytelling, will be released in premium formats through a global partnership with CJ 4DPLEX, making it the first Indian film to premiere in ScreenX worldwide. Scheduled for release during Diwali 2026, Ramayana Part 1 promises an immersive theatrical experience that redefines the boundaries of contemporary cinema.
Malhotra emphasizes that from its inception, Ramayana has aimed to present a global cinematic experience. "Our collaboration with CJ 4DPLEX brings this iconic film to life in formats that resonate with its vast scope and vision," he stated. This partnership will enable audiences in over 1,200 theaters worldwide to engage deeply with the story. Starring prominent actors such as Ranbir Kapoor as Ram, Yash as Ravana, and Sai Pallavi as Sita, this film heralds a significant cultural moment for Indian cinema as it embraces advanced immersive technologies.
The utilization of ScreenX—a format that expands select scenes onto the side walls of auditoriums—alongside 4DX's multisensory elements, is a deliberate strategy to elevate the viewer's connection to the film. Jun Bang, CEO of CJ 4DPLEX, remarked that Ramayana: Part 1 is perfectly suited for these cutting-edge formats, as it embodies the epic scale and emotional depth that such technologies are designed to showcase. This collaboration reflects a growing trend within the Indian film industry to adopt innovative exhibition formats, catering to a burgeoning audience eager for enhanced cinematic experiences.
As premium formats gain traction in India, the significance of Ramayana's debut in ScreenX should not be underestimated. CJ 4DPLEX's Chief Business Officer, Don Savant, noted that the film's combination of grandiose visuals and profound narrative aligns seamlessly with the immersive capabilities of both ScreenX and 4DX. The synergy between these technologies and the film's artistic vision could not only attract viewers but also set a precedent for future Indian productions aiming for international acclaim in the global cinematic landscape.
