RGV Explodes Over Ranveer Singh Ban

Bollywood's latest controversy has found an outspoken commentator in filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma, who has come out strongly in support of actor Ranveer Singh after the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) reportedly imposed a ban on the star. Never one to mince words, RGV slammed the move as an example of an "outdated union system" trying to flex its muscles while ignoring the realities of modern filmmaking.
RGV argued that actors like Ranveer Singh are not just performers but economic engines who generate employment for thousands of technicians, crew members, and cinema workers. Questioning the relevance and authority of industry unions, the filmmaker said that stars help keep the film industry alive, while punitive actions without due process only hurt the larger ecosystem. He also raised concerns about the legal standing of such bans, calling them arbitrary and damaging.
The controversy erupted after Ranveer Singh's exit from Farhan Akhtar's much-awaited 'Don 3'. The actor reportedly walked away from the project due to script-related changes after being associated with the film for nearly three years. Following complaints from producers Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani to the Indian Film & Television Directors' Association (IFTDA), FWICE stepped in and reportedly issued notices to Singh. The federation claims the actor did not respond to multiple communications.
Ranveer's departure has dealt a major blow to 'Don 3', a project that had already incurred more than Rs 45 crore in pre-production expenses and was expected to mark Farhan Akhtar's return to directing. The film, envisioned as the next chapter of the iconic 'Don' franchise made famous by Amitabh Bachchan and later Shah Rukh Khan, had generated significant buzz but is yet to go on floors.
While FWICE has remained silent on Varma's criticism, the debate has reignited larger questions about the balance of power in Bollywood. As fans, filmmakers, and industry insiders weigh in, one thing is clear: the battle over Ranveer Singh's exit from 'Don 3' has become much bigger than just one film.
