Telangana Movie Business Sees Major Shake-Up

In a significant move that underscores the growing tensions within the regional film industry, the Telangana Exhibitors Association convened an emergency meeting on Saturday in Hyderabad, where they resolved to implement a percentage-sharing model for the screening of films. This decision comes as producers have repeatedly postponed discussions on the matter, with Sridhar, the secretary of the Telangana Film Chamber of Commerce, asserting that the new system will take effect immediately, impacting all films, including the highly anticipated "Peddi". The urgency of the situation is amplified by the financial struggles faced by many single-screen theatres, which risk closure if the status quo persists.
The backdrop to this decision highlights a year-long dialogue that has yielded little progress. Initially brought to the forefront during the discussions surrounding the release of "Hari Hara Veera Mallu", the issue of revenue sharing has remained unresolved despite multiple negotiations involving producers, exhibitors, and distributors. Sridhar indicated that prolonged delays threaten the viability of numerous theatres, with nearly 120 currently grappling with financial instability due to an outdated rental system. As successful films now barely sustain screenings for a week, the disparity in revenue streams between producers and exhibitors has never been more pronounced, prompting this decisive shift.
Beyond the immediate implications for revenue sharing, the exhibitors voiced their discontent regarding proposed ticket price hikes and a potential grading system for theatres. Vijayender Reddy, president of the Telangana Exhibitors Association, emphatically stated their opposition to any increase in ticket prices, emphasizing that the association has formally petitioned state authorities to maintain current pricing structures. His remarks echo the broader reluctance among exhibitors to accept measures that could further compromise their already precarious situation, especially in the face of rising operational costs and diminishing audience turnout.
As the producers of "Peddi", set to release on June 4 and featuring stars Ram Charan and Janhvi Kapoor, now face pressure to reconcile their interests with those of the exhibitors, the stakes are high. The tensions surrounding ticket pricing and revenue sharing could potentially redefine the landscape of film distribution in Telangana. Notably, the recent leadership change within the Telangana Film Chamber of Commerce, following Suniel Narang's resignation, adds another layer of complexity to these negotiations, as new president Juvvadi Chandrasekhar Rao must navigate these turbulent waters with a keen sense of urgency and diplomacy.
