Retired IPS Officer's Wife Found Murdered In Hyd

In a shocking incident that has sent ripples through Hyderabad's elite circles, Tanuja Ranjan, the wife of retired IPS officer Vinay Ranjan Ray, was discovered brutally murdered at their upscale residence in Prashasan Nagar, Jubilee Hills. The 62-year-old victim was reportedly smothered to death, with investigators suspecting that the family's domestic help, a Nepali woman named Kalpana, orchestrated the heinous act before fleeing with valuable possessions. The gruesome discovery was made early Friday morning when one of the couple's daughters, Sunanda, found Tanuja unconscious in her bedroom, her hands and legs bound, with a blood-stained cloth stuffed into her mouth.

As police delve deeper into the case, they have revealed that Tanuja was home alone with her daughters while her husband had traveled to Bengaluru for personal matters. The family's residence, a three-storeyed structure, had the ground floor leased to another family, thereby isolating the victims at night. Investigators believe that the crime occurred around 2 a.m., following an extensive period of surveillance by the domestic help, who had been with the family for over a year. This familiarity with the family's routines likely facilitated the crime, as Kalpana allegedly planned the assault in collaboration with three unidentified male accomplices who remain at large.

Vinay Ranjan Ray, a distinguished member of the Indian Police Service who served as the Director General of Prisons before his retirement in 2019, is now grappling with the aftermath of this tragic event. The police are focusing on a possible motive of robbery, as valuable items were reported missing from the home. Witnesses claimed to have seen three men entering the premises around 1 a.m. without masks, carrying iron rods and a bag believed to contain stolen goods. The investigation has been further complicated by the fact that the daughters, who had reportedly been awake until about 3 a.m., heard no disturbances during the time of the attack.

City Police Commissioner V C Sajjanar has characterized the murder as a calculated act, facilitated by an insider who exploited her position within the household. He noted that the crime was not just a random burglary but rather a meticulously planned operation driven by greed. With ten special teams deployed to trace the suspects, the investigation is intensifying, as the police await a complete inventory of the missing items from the grieving family. This chilling incident raises pressing questions about safety and security, even within the seemingly protected enclaves of Hyderabad's affluent society.
