TVK functionary caught in bribery row

TVK functionary caught in bribery row

Hours after the Tamil Nadu government launched a dedicated WhatsApp helpline to encourage the public to report bribery complaints against government officials, a video purportedly showing a TVK functionary accepting cash from a contractor surfaced on social media, triggering political controversy and renewed debate over corruption in local bodies.

The video, whose authenticity has not been independently verified, purportedly shows N.V. Veera, president of the Mambakkam panchayat and Chengalpattu East district joint secretary of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), receiving Rs 30,000 in cash from a contractor.

During the conversation, another individual is allegedly heard saying that Rs 1 lakh had already been transferred. The footage appears to have been secretly recorded by the contractor.

According to the visuals circulating online, the payment was allegedly linked to the clearance of a contractor's pending bill after the completion of road works. However, there has been no official confirmation regarding the circumstances under which the money was exchanged, and no formal complaint has yet been publicly announced in connection with the video. Authorities have also not confirmed whether any preliminary inquiry has been initiated.

The development assumes significance as it came on the very day the state government stepped up its anti-corruption campaign by directing all government offices, district collectorates, local bodies and public sector undertakings to prominently display bilingual awareness boards carrying the message, "Bribe giving and receiving is an offence," along with the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) WhatsApp helpline number 94981 80936.

The Chief Secretary instructed all government departments, district collectors and heads of public sector undertakings to ensure the awareness boards are displayed in both Tamil and English at prominent locations. The initiative is intended to encourage citizens to report incidents of bribery and corruption directly to the DVAC through the newly introduced WhatsApp platform, enabling quicker reporting and follow-up.

The viral video has since sparked widespread discussion on social media, with opposition parties and several users questioning the government's anti-corruption claims and calling for a thorough investigation into the allegations.

As of now, neither the Tamil Nadu government nor the TVK leadership has issued an official statement on the authenticity of the video or whether any legal, departmental or disciplinary action will be initiated against the party functionary.

The incident has drawn considerable public attention, particularly because it coincided with the government's latest anti-graft initiative.
