'Varanasi' Cleared for Rajamouli

The title hurdle for director S.S. Rajamouli's ambitious film starring Mahesh Babu has finally been resolved. After weeks of speculation over the title 'Varanasi', the issue has been settled amicably, clearing the way for the filmmaker to officially use the name. The title had previously been registered by director C.H. Subba Reddy, leading to uncertainty over whether Rajamouli's much-awaited globe-trotting adventure would need a different title.

Subba Reddy, who had registered 'Varanasi' with the Film Chamber in 2023 for his own planned project inspired by Sanatana Dharma, made a remarkable gesture by voluntarily handing over the title. Despite earlier announcing his own film under the same name, he chose not to stand in the way of Rajamouli's prestigious venture. In the presence of industry representatives, including Producers Council Secretary Prasanna Kumar and former Directors Association President Veera Shankar, he formally informed producer K.L. Narayana that the title was being transferred without seeking any financial compensation.

Speaking about his decision, Subba Reddy said 'Varanasi' was an emotional title for him rather than a commercial asset. He emphasized that he never viewed film titles as business opportunities and did not accept even a single rupee for the transfer. Calling it an honor that the title would now be associated with Mahesh Babu and Rajamouli's landmark film, he wished the team success. Industry members praised the gesture as a rare example of goodwill and cooperation, hoping it would inspire similar resolutions in future title disputes. According to reports, Mahesh Babu will reportedly play Rudra, while Prithviraj Sukumaran is expected to portray the powerful character Kumbha in the epic film.
