Water Crisis: Hyd Sees Record Tanker Demand

Hyderabad is grappling with an unprecedented water crisis, as evidenced by a staggering record of 15,200 tanker bookings in a single day this past Saturday. This alarming figure underscores the severity of the city’s dwindling groundwater resources, driven further by a complete absence of summer rainfall in May. The volume of tanker requests has surpassed the previous high of 12,000, signaling an urgent need for action amidst an ongoing water shortage that now affects a substantial portion of the population, equating to approximately one tanker for every 90 households.

The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) has reported a sharp increase in water tanker demand over the last several days, consistently hovering around 15,000 bookings daily. In May alone, residents consumed over 310,000 water tankers, prompting the board to expand its operational capacity. This expansion includes increasing filling stations from 86 to 96 and operational tankers from 1,135 to 1,250 in an effort to meet the surging demand. However, with monsoon rains yet to materialize, the pressure on the HMWSSB to ensure timely delivery remains critical, particularly as more than half of the bookings are concentrated in western Hyderabad’s densely populated areas.

The current crisis is not merely a symptom of rising demand but also reflects the long-term challenges facing Hyderabad's water management systems. Critically low groundwater levels, exacerbated by an unseasonably dry May, have left many neighborhoods scrambling to secure adequate supplies. Areas such as Kukatpally, Durgam Cheruvu, and Banjara Hills have reported significant delays in tanker deliveries, with some residents waiting up to five days for their booked services. This situation highlights the inadequacies in infrastructure and planning that have led to widespread distress among citizens who rely on these deliveries for their daily needs.

Residents have expressed mounting frustration over the delays, with many resorting to hiring private tankers at premium prices to meet their urgent needs. VK Jayaraj, a Banjara Hills resident, articulated the plight many are facing, stating, "I had booked a tanker on May 26, but received it only on May 31 after nearly six days. We were forced to hire a private tanker at a higher cost." Officials from HMWSSB acknowledge the operational challenges, revealing that while they strive to deliver 95% of tankers within 24 hours, logistical issues arise when customers are unresponsive or cancel bookings after receiving supplies. The convergence of these factors paints a grim picture for Hyderabad as residents navigate what has become a dire water crisis.
