Water Crisis Looms in Hyderabad

The city is on the brink of a dire drinking water crisis, with key reservoirs rapidly depleting amid a backdrop of deficient rainfall and El Niño weather patterns. The urban core, particularly vulnerable, is witnessing alarming reductions in water supply, with the Singur reservoir—which serves the city’s booming IT sector—currently at a mere 3.9 TMC, a staggering drop from its full capacity of 29.9 TMC. With storage levels plummeting to just 13%, officials warn that this reservoir could run dry as soon as mid-December, marking the start of a potential crisis that could impact millions of residents across the region.

The alarming status of Singur is not an isolated incident; Osmansagar, another critical reservoir supplying the Old City and its surroundings, has seen its water levels decreased from approximately 3.5 TMC to 2.2 TMC. This diminishment exacerbates the precarious situation as the city grapples with an overall 17% rainfall deficit declared by the Telangana government. The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) is preparing contingency plans in anticipation of severe shortages, prompting urgent measures to ensure a reliable drinking water supply amid dwindling resources.

The dire situation is compounded by the broader implications for agricultural practices, as the Telangana government has prioritized urban water needs over irrigation, directing officials not to allocate more water for agricultural use. With water levels in major reservoirs across the Krishna and Godavari basins remaining alarmingly low, the specter of a drinking water shortage looms larger than ever. According to a chief engineer from the irrigation department, the typical routing of water through rural areas is becoming increasingly untenable, with potential shortages expected to materialize as soon as the end of this year.

In response to the looming crisis, K Ashok Reddy, managing director of HMWSSB, has mandated the development of comprehensive, area-based contingency plans. These plans will delineate alternative water sources, supply routes, and the specific quantities available to each locality should disruptions occur. Identifying areas with low pressure is also a critical aspect of this strategy, highlighting the urgent need for preparedness as reservoir levels continue their alarming decline. The swift action reflects a recognition that the clock is ticking, and with it, the city's capacity to avert an impending water crisis diminishes with each passing day.
