AI171 Survivor’s Life Takes Another Turn

One year after the tragic crash of Flight 171 in Ahmedabad, Viswashkumar Ramesh, the sole survivor, continues to grapple with the profound impact of the disaster. Ramesh shares his ongoing struggles with sleep, anxiety, and haunting memories, shedding light on the enduring trauma resulting from the tragedy. Images of Ramesh walking away from the crash site, stained with blood, have left an indelible mark on global media. Having lost his brother in the catastrophe, Ramesh faces not only physical and psychological challenges but also financial hardships. He has sought legal representation to explore civil claims and is in negotiations with Air India for rehabilitation support.

The Boeing 787 Dreamliner crashed 32 seconds after take-off on June 12, 2025, claiming 260 lives, including 241 on board and 19 on the ground. Despite the harrowing ordeal, Air India has reaffirmed its commitment to providing comprehensive support to all those affected by the AI171 tragedy. Ramesh, 39, residing in Leicester with his family, emphasizes that survival is only a part of his story, as he continues to grapple with the overwhelming difficulties that have arisen since the crash. He expresses gratitude for being alive but emphasizes the far more arduous challenges he faces daily.

Ramesh has engaged Hudgell Solicitors in the UK to represent his legal interests, seeking redress for the disaster's repercussions. Constructive discussions with Air India are underway to secure physical and psychological rehabilitation support. Patel, a community leader close to Ramesh's family, highlights the profound impact of the disaster on Ramesh, stating that he remains severely traumatized and dependent on support for daily activities.

In March, Ramesh met with representatives of the Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) as part of the official inquiry into the crash. The UK's Air Accidents Investigation Branch, offering expert assistance to Indian investigators, extends sympathy to all those affected by the accident. The enduring trauma and legal battles faced by Ramesh and other families affected by the tragedy underscore the long-lasting impact of the AI171 crash.
