Hyderabad Doctor Scammed Over 1 Crore in Matrimonial Fraud

A doctor in Hyderabad fell victim to a matrimonial fraud, losing over 1.1 crore to a cunning scam artist. The scam began when the doctor created a profile on a matrimonial app in November last year. Subsequently, she was contacted via WhatsApp by a man posing as a foreigner and expressing interest in marriage. To build trust, the scammer shared photographs and documents, including a fake driving license. After establishing contact, the scammer feigned a visit to India and later a woman, posing as an officer from Delhi airport, contacted the doctor claiming that her prospective fiancé had been arrested for illegal possession of foreign currency.

The doctor was then coerced into sending money for various reasons such as GST, income tax, IMF certificates, and visa renewal, under the false pretense of it being refunded later. The scammer impersonated officials from security agencies, keeping the victim under the illusion that her prospective groom was in custody for months. It was only when the scammers became unreachable that the victim realized she had been deceived. The cyber crime police stated, 'The accused posed as security officials and persistently contacted the victim from November to February, convincing her that her prospective groom was in custody. Only recently, the scammers disappeared, leading the victim to comprehend that she had been a victim of cyber fraud.' This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of online fraud and the importance of exercising caution in virtual relationships.
