Parliamentary Panel Summons Tech Giants

The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Communications and Information Technology, led by Chairman Nishikant Dubey, has announced plans to summon major digital and social media platforms such as Meta Platforms, X, Google, and Amazon. This move comes as part of the committee's ongoing investigation into net neutrality and equal internet access. Dubey emphasized the importance of ensuring that all 140 crore internet users in the country have equal rights under consumer protection laws.

Following the committee's recent meeting on May 26, Dubey stated that they are scrutinizing whether telecom operators and digital platforms are offering preferential access to specific user categories, including post-paid subscribers and paying customers on online platforms. The agenda for the Parliamentary panel meeting included a briefing by the Department of Telecommunications and the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) on 'Quality of Service Standards and Consumer Protection in Telecom Sector,' with a specific focus on net neutrality.

Dubey clarified that the committee has not reached any conclusions yet and further discussions will continue in the following weeks. He highlighted the significance of net neutrality, stressing that all consumers, encompassing the 140 crore internet users, should be entitled to equal rights under Consumer Protection Rights. Dubey also addressed concerns regarding prepaid and post-paid consumers, indicating that while the government determines the licensing conditions of the network, certain companies may be inclined to provide more convenience to post-paid users. However, he emphasized that the committee has not yet concluded on this matter.
