Trekking Students Encounter Deadly Ordnance in TN

In a harrowing incident that underscores the perilous consequences of negligence near military zones, a 21-year-old engineering student tragically lost his life after kicking an unexploded bomb during a trek near the Anumanthapuram firing range in Singaperumal Koil, Tamil Nadu. Emansu Yadav, a final-year electrical and electronics student at SRM Engineering College, sustained catastrophic injuries to his chest and arms, dying instantly when the ordnance detonated on Monday evening. The trek, undertaken by a group of six students without prior authorization, has raised serious concerns about safety practices and awareness in areas adjacent to military training grounds.

The group, which included students from various states, had reached a hilltop when they stumbled upon the suspicious iron object, which they believed to be unexploded ordnance. In a moment of reckless curiosity, one of the students kicked the object, triggering a devastating explosion. Four other students were injured in the blast, with one, Vishal Venugopal, suffering severe damage to his left hand. The others—Aryan Sharma, Krishna Siraj Mahajan, and Nishkas Niraj—also sustained injuries, while another student, Virat Sanjay Kumar, narrowly escaped harm. The injured have been transported to SRM Hospital in Potheri for urgent medical care.

This tragic event highlights the hidden dangers that lurk around unauthorized access to military zones, where remnants of munitions can remain undiscovered for years. Local law enforcement officials have confirmed that the Singaperumal Koil area is utilized for live firing exercises by security forces, raising urgent questions about how dangerous explosives were left unattended amidst a location frequented by civilians. As investigations proceed, authorities are attempting to ascertain the history of the explosive device and assess the protocols in place for securing such hazardous materials.

Witnesses and local officials have expressed dismay over the incident, calling it a wake-up call for increased public safety campaigns regarding military zones. Senior police officers are actively analyzing the scene and will be considering stricter enforcement of access regulations to prevent future tragedies. This incident not only serves as a painful reminder of the risks associated with military training areas but also emphasizes the need for greater awareness and respect for the dangers that unexploded ordnance can pose to the unwitting public.
