Modern cinema is losing its emotional core!
Veteran actor Rakesh Bedi believes today’s cinema looks bigger but feels emptier — and the reason, he says, is simple: emotion has taken a back seat to spectacle.
Speaking to IANS, Bedi said modern films are high on visuals and production value but low on heartfelt storytelling. “We are creating less drama now. Action, glamour, item numbers — that’s the formula. Only a few films today carry real emotional weight,” he noted, citing Saiyaara as an example of a small film that worked purely because of its emotional richness.
On comedy, Bedi said the golden era of films like Chupke Chupke, Chashme Baddoor, Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi, and Padosan showcased humour that came naturally from every character — not from a designated comedian. “In India, we barely make one pure comedy film every decade,” he said.
He added that shows like Bhabhi Ji Ghar Par Hain and Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah still succeed because their humour remains organic — a space where creators rarely experiment anymore.
Rakesh Bedi was last seen in the action thriller Dhurandhar, playing Jameel Jamali, a sharp and intimidating Pakistani politician, in Aditya Dhar’s 2025 spy drama featuring Ranveer Singh, Akshaye Khanna, R. Madhavan and others.
