Why Vijay Succeeded Where Pawan Stalled?
"Think of politicians like fruit: they might come from the same tree (or field/orchard), but no two have the exact same 'colour' or 'taste', when it's about electroal politics”
This fruit analogy highlights how two leaders like Vijay of TVK and Pawan Kalyan (PK) of Jana Sena Party (JSP) can share the same "roots", stardom and cinema, yet had completely different outcomes when they entered the political stage and enacting their political performances.
Both leaders come from the same "tree" of South Indian superstardom. They both relied on their massive, loyal fan bases to build their political foundations. Because they are both "actor-turned-politicians," the public initially expected them to follow the same script, but their individual "political flavours" led to very different results.
In the 2026 Assembly elections, actor-turned-politician Vijay’s TVK delivered a historic performance and emerged as the single largest party in its first electoral outing in Tamil Nadu.
Within just two years of launching the party, Vijay now stands as an individual force to reckon or at least it appears so, as of now, while PK despite being in the politics for nearly a decade, continues to be enacting a supportive role for both the TDP and the BJP. While Vijay appears to have almost found his footing, PK is still struggling to find his.
Despite a common ideological baseline, the divergence in their tactical political enactment resulted in highly asymmetrical outcomes for their inaugural electoral campaigns.
Both men started with a nod to iconic heroes, but their approach to practice differed. While Vijay stuck to the solid Dravidian values of equality and state pride, PK tried to build a brand around his own 'Ism', a theory based on 'questioning' power, only to end up as a confusing question with no real answer.
Ultimately, both, at the start of their political pursuit, tried to offer voters something completely different from the usual communal or capitalist policies of the major parties.
From day one, Vijay stayed true to his own political 'flavour,' proving he was a serious leader and not just a part-time actor. In contrast, Pawan Kalyan diluted his brand by mixing his 'Ism' with the BJP and TDP, a move critics mocked as blending 'stale Laddus' with 'special packages.' This messy combination led rivals to dismiss his ideology as 'Confusionism' and label him a 'Package Star' for hire.
Vijay grew his power from the roots, bringing different castes together under one flag. Pawan Kalyan, meanwhile, followed a 'road map' provided by political masters in the BJP and TDP. Despite his Kapu backing, he was labelled a sidekick to the Kamma leadership. This alliance with traditional rivals made his politics look less like a revolution and more like a supporting role in someone else's movie.
It took nearly a decade for PK and support and directions from his main alliance parties to earn some kind of relevance, despite which he still finds himself in a supportive role.
What makes the achievement even bigger is that this new entrant did it without any political allies as against the DMK, which had 23 allies, in a state where cash flows heavily during elections. It did so while dealing with pressure from proxies of the Union government to ally with the NDA, and while simultaneously facing a hostile DMK-led state machinery in Tamil Nadu.
"The contrast is clear, wherein, Pawan Kalyan needed ten years and powerful friends to get a seat at the table, where he remains a junior partner.
Vijay, however, turned out to be, for now, the ultimate disruptor. He fought a multi-front war, resisting pressure from the Centre and fighting the state government, without a single ally. Doing this in a high-stakes, high-cash election makes his achievement a historic feat.
On the other hand, many experts are comparing Vijay’s feat with that of NTR, which one feels is off the mark, as it misses “ the most important factor: “The Competition”.
NTR entered a landscape where the only real opponent was a fading Congress party. He didn't have to fight other powerful local rivals.
In contrast, Vijay faced arguably the toughest challenge in Indian politics. He had to break the decades-long grip of the two “Dravidian majors”. As a political leader born only in 2024, Vijay was a “David taking on two Goliaths”.
Vijay’s historic win is just the start as now he has to prove he can actually do what he promised.
To succeed, he must avoid the trap that caught PK, who promised to be a voice of dissent but ultimately became a ‘yes man’ for the Union government and the state government, even when their policies hurt his stated objectives and also the very relevance of his political party.
Vijay’s true character will be revealed by how he handles pressure from the Centre on sensitive topics like language, delimitation and taxes.
His choices will define him. It will show the world if he is a genuine leader or just another ‘Package Star’ who talks big but follows the script of his political directors.
To conclude in fruit analogy, Vijay’s actions will determine if he remains a fresh alternative or if he, like those before him, loses his unique flavour to the pressures of the political orchard.
